How to Use Stir with Children
Stir can be used in children’s work, but it will take a bit of adaptation, as some of the concepts and content will be too confusing or too intense for children of certain ages.
We suggest the following:
For Older Primary or Elementary Age (Years 5-6):
Stir Pack 1:
- Card 1: Introduce the idea that we are more than our body and brain and that we have a spirit or soul
- Card 2: Help children experience the wonder of our smallness in comparison to the vastness of the universe
- Card 5: Most children will have prayed. Help them to experience that and understand what they were searching for.
Stir Pack 2:
- Card 1: Help children become aware that God wants us to be connected with Him, but the connection is broken
- Card 3: Help children experience the freedom forgiveness brings
- Card 5: Help children experience that connecting to God helps us feel good about ourselves
- Card 6: Share your own experience of how God helps your life
Stir Pack 3 and 4:
All of the sessions will be appropriate for children of this age
For Younger Primary or Elementary Age
Stir Pack 1
- Card 1: Use the balloon illustration to help children think about the mind, body and soul. (the remainder of the session may be too complex)
Stir Pack 2
- Card 1: Help children become aware that God wants us to be connected with Him, but the connection is broken
- Card 5: Help children experience that connecting to God helps us feel good about ourselves.
Stir Pack 3
The videos for most sessions and reflection questions that focus on feelings and basic understanding of the video will be appropriate for most children.
The experiences for cards 2, 3, 4 and 6 will be appropriate for most children.
Stir Pack 4
The appropriateness of the content for Stir Pack 4 will depend on whether your children’s work is in a school or church context. Most of the experiences and illustrations will be appropriate for children of this age.
